A Simple guide to Networking
Good Morning,
In today's newsletter, today I will be sharing 5 tips on how to improve your networking skills.
We all know the saying, "your network is your net worth", which highlights the importance of a foundation of connections. For some people, the skill of networking comes naturally, whilst others may struggle to do so. My aim for today is to give you more ways to build a strong network and boost your confidence in forming new connections.
Utilise Social Media
Forming connections online is probably the easiest and one of the most effective ways you expand your network. Aside from more 'casual' apps like Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat, I would strongly recommend using LinkedIn when building up your network. Not only does LinkedIn allow you to connect with other professionals at ease, but it also enables you to filter them by their industries and roles - handing you the opportunity to customise the arrangement of your network.
2. Use Existing Connections
An abundant source of new connections is the connections you already have. When approaching a contact, especially one in an entirely different profession, it is beneficial to have a mutual connection. This speeds up the process of recruiting the contact as part of your network, assuming your mutual friend has a good reputation.
3. Do Not Take Up Too Much Time
You mustn't pester or take up too much time with someone you would like to connect with. By showing excessive eagerness, you present your possible relationship with someone as more of a liability than an asset - ultimately driving them away. Keep your interactions concise to start with and do not extend them past a natural point.
4. Ask Questions
Asking a question is one of the simplest ways to start a fruitful conversation. Sharing opinions will enable you to build a relationship with others, avoiding the trap of forming meaningless connections.
5. Remember To Listen
Whilst networking, remember to let the other person do an equal share of the talking. Being a good listener will take you far in your journey to success. Use what others tell you to identify where you may add value or where they may benefit your work. In addition, assuring people that you appreciate their opinion creates a solid foundation for your professional relationship with them.
