Goal Settings
Good Morning,
Today I’ll be talking about goal setting, its importance and tips on how you can effectively implement this into your daily life.
Why Set Goals?
It’s no secret that hard work is an essential component in the pursuit of success. All of the role models we generally look up to, from Michael Jordan to Steve Jobs, all possess the consistent factor that is hard work. Driven by their passion and determination they made their dreams a reality.
On the outside, we see a journey to one end goal, but what lies beneath the surface is a marathon of hundreds, even thousands of individual stepping stones.
Your dedication and passion keep your eyes on your goals. Your hard work helps you advance towards your goals. With this in mind, if no goals were ever set, what would it all be worth?
Benefits of Goal Setting
We have already identified the significance of goal setting, but what are the specific benefits we can expect from implementing it into our daily lives?
1. A Better Sense of Direction
Your goal acts as a destination - whether short or long-term, you are always working toward a target. This will help you plan for the days, weeks and months ahead and manage your time effectively.
2. Control Over Your Own Life
When you do not have goals to work towards, you will find yourself allowing others to choose how you spend your time. This also puts your future in the hands of others rather than where they should be - your own.
Setting goals will encourage you to prioritise yourself and take action to get closer and closer to that desired destination.
3. Improved Decision Making
Once your goals are set in stone, you will find it easier to make decisions that would have left you hesitant in the past. You can make effective decisions by picking out the option that positions you best to accomplish your goal(s).
Some Tips For Setting Goals
Put Your Goals In Writing
I strongly recommend writing your goals down and placing them somewhere safe where you can revisit them at ease. Use this as a point of reorientation to get back into the routine of serving your best interests whenever you feel lost or demoralised.
2. Set SMART Goals
The goals you set should be SMART. This is an acronym you may have heard already, but its importance is never lacking.
Your goals should be:
Specific - Clear, defined goals will give you the strongest sense of direction.
Measurable - The ability to measure your progress will let you know if it’s time to make changes to become more efficient, as well as provide you with some motivation along the way.
Achievable - Do not set unrealistic goals for yourself, it is likely that nothing good will come of them. Do not let this stop you from setting highly ambitious goals - just be sure to focus on the many steps and milestones required to get there.
Relevant - Your goals should be relevant to the path you want to take in life. Keep your goals aligned with this path to maintain focus.
Time-Bound - Adding a deadline to your goals introduces an element of urgency that we sometimes need to get things done. It is important that you set realistic deadlines for yourself to avoid inconsistency and demoralisation.
3. Do Not Become Static
Goal setting should be ongoing. As you accomplish more, new goals should take the place of old ones - maintaining your cycle of self-improvement and success.
“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible” ~ Tony Robbins.
